Weeke Community Centre emerged from the ground in 1954, whilst the housing estate of Weeke grew around it. The building soon became the centre point of the community and was widely used by people of all walks of life. We have seen many changes during its life, but the community still remains the key element of the centre, with its doors open 7 days a week, 52 days of the year.
The Community Centre is run by the board of trustees. This is made up of 9 people, most of whom are users of the centre. These dedicated people are in place to run the centre on a day to day basis and to manage and secure funding, ensuring the long-term future of the centre.
One of the major changes currently underway is the improvement of access and facilities for the disabled. Further projects to be considered in the near future are the upgrade of the kitchen facilities and stage area.
Back in the late 50s and 60s, the centre was home to the Weeke Association Drama Group. This group put on many shows, panto’s and children’s entertainment. The committee are hopeful that the centre can again provide entertainment such as this – Improved stage facilities are a step in the right direction.
So, if you are local to the centre why not drop in and see what we have to offer, we will always be pleased to see you.
